Celiac disease is a type of autoimmune disorder which affects the digestive system. It is characterized by a sensitivity to gluten, a type of protein found in wheat and wheat products. Symptoms depend on the severity of the condition; in people with mild cases of celiac disease, no symptoms may occur. In moderate to severe cases, symptoms include cramps, stomach pain, pale diarrhea, anemia, weight loss, bloating, dermatitis and even infertility. The primary approach to treatment centers around dietary modifications which reduce symptoms, including the elimination of all forms of gluten in the patient’s diet. Over-the-counter and prescription medications may also be recommended for symptom control.
